What to pack in your beach bag (and what to leave at home)

The perfect beach bag is light and carries almost nothing. These are the things you actually use.

After many summers, the list has shortened itself. This is what always gets used.

High-factor sun protection, and enough of it. Most of us put on half of what we need and then blame the cream.

Water. More than you think. Heat and salt dehydrate you faster than you notice.

A loose cotton or linen t-shirt. It works as portable shade at midday and a layer of warmth by seven.

A spare swimsuit, or at least a dry pair of bottoms. Going home in wet clothes is the number one reason people leave earlier than they meant to. That's what the essentials are for: the piece you don't think about and always end up wearing.

And a small waterproof pouch for your phone and keys, which takes up no space and prevents the one disaster of the day you can't undo.

What stays at home? The book you never open, the speaker, and the parasol if you're going for less than two hours.
