What the sea does to your head
It's not just a feeling. There are some fairly concrete reasons why the sea sorts your thoughts out.
Everyone says the sea is calming, and almost no one explains why. There are at least three fairly down-to-earth reasons.
The first is the sound. Waves produce a continuous, unstartling noise, the kind the brain stops keeping watch on. In a city, by contrast, every sound is a potential warning.
The second is the horizon. We spend the day looking at things half a metre away: screens, papers, faces. Looking out for miles literally relaxes the eye muscle, and it shows.
The third is the cold water. It triggers an intense, brief physical response, and once you're out, the body settles into a calm that isn't just in your head.
You don't need to believe any of this for it to work. You just need to go down.
